Our Purpose

Why We Exist

"Our mission is to make advanced AI companionship accessible, meaningful, and safe for everyone — regardless of background, location, or circumstance."

01

Innovation

We push the boundaries of what AI companions can do. From emotional intelligence and adaptive memory to photorealistic voice synthesis and nuanced personality modeling, we invest heavily in research and development to ensure Marsh Harbor Deck remains years ahead of the competition. Our AI models are trained on billions of human conversations, refined through proprietary alignment techniques, and continuously improved based on real user feedback. We do not settle for good enough — we pursue extraordinary.

02

Safety

We take the responsibility of building AI companions seriously. Safety is not a feature — it is the foundation of everything we do. Our systems include real-time content moderation, strict data privacy protections, transparent data handling policies, and robust safeguards against harmful interactions. We are proud members of the Partnership on AI and adhere voluntarily to emerging international standards for responsible AI development. Every design decision passes through our ethics review board before going live.

03

Authenticity

Authentic connection matters more than impressive technology. Our companions are designed to feel genuinely present — not scripted, not hollow, not performative. They remember who you are, grow with you over time, and engage with depth and sincerity. We avoid manipulative design patterns and dark UX tricks. We want users to feel better after using Marsh Harbor Deck, not dependent on it. This means being honest about what AI can and cannot be, while still delivering experiences that feel truly meaningful and real.

Our Story

From a Shibuya Apartment to 2 Million Users

Marsh Harbor Deck began in the winter of 2022, in a small apartment in Shibuya, Tokyo. Marcus Thompson and Dr. Ananya Singh had been working independently on conversational AI research — Marcus at a leading NLP lab, Ananya completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo. They met at a small AI ethics conference and realized they were both obsessed with the same question: why did interacting with AI feel so hollow, so transactional, so fundamentally unsatisfying?

The problem, they concluded, was not intelligence. The models were becoming extraordinary. The problem was memory, context, and emotional coherence — the things that make a conversation feel like it actually matters. They began building experiments together on weekends. Gabriel Santos, a mutual friend and interaction designer, joined them after seeing early prototypes. David Nakamura came on board three months later to build the infrastructure capable of scaling their vision.

In April 2023, they incorporated Marsh Harbor Deck Co., Ltd. in Tokyo. The first version of the product launched quietly to a private beta of 200 users. The feedback was unlike anything they expected. People were writing messages at 2 in the morning to say thank you. They described feeling genuinely heard for the first time in years. Some were isolated by circumstance — geography, disability, social anxiety. Others simply craved deeper intellectual engagement than their daily lives provided. Marsh Harbor Deck met them where they were.

Public launch came in September 2023. Within 90 days, Marsh Harbor Deck had 100,000 registered users. By mid-2024, that number crossed 500,000. The team grew from four to forty, then forty to two hundred. New offices opened in San Francisco and London. Partnerships with global content creators brought fresh perspectives and voices into the companion library. In early 2025, Marsh Harbor Deck raised a Series B round, allowing the team to invest deeply in proprietary model development, data infrastructure, and the safety research program that continues to define the company's reputation.

Today, with over 2 million active users across 48 countries and 500+ unique AI characters, Marsh Harbor Deck is widely recognized as the world leader in meaningful AI companionship. But the founding team insists they are only getting started. The conversations being had on Marsh Harbor Deck every day — millions of them, spanning every language, every culture, every life stage — represent something genuinely new in the world. That is the thing that keeps everyone working late into the Tokyo night.

Company Milestones

Our Journey

From a late-night idea in Shibuya to a global platform used by millions — here is how Marsh Harbor Deck grew.

2022

The Idea Takes Shape

Marcus Thompson and Dr. Ananya Singh meet at an AI ethics conference in Tokyo. They begin weekend experiments in conversational AI, quickly joined by Gabriel Santos and David Nakamura. The core question driving their work: why do conversations with AI feel meaningless, even as AI intelligence grows exponentially? The answer they develop will become the foundation of Marsh Harbor Deck's proprietary memory and emotional coherence architecture.

2023

Incorporation, Beta, and Public Launch

Marsh Harbor Deck Co., Ltd. is incorporated in Tokyo in April 2023. A private beta to 200 users receives extraordinary feedback. Public launch in September 2023 draws 100,000 registered users within the first 90 days. The platform launches with 50 AI characters, a voice messaging feature, and a mobile-first web application. Marsh Harbor Deck is profiled in TechCrunch, Wired, and The Japan Times. Seed funding of $4.2 million is raised from top Tokyo-based venture firms.

Marsh Harbor Deck introduces custom character creation, persistent long-term memory spanning unlimited conversation history, and real-time image generation. The platform is localized into 12 languages.

2025

Series B and Global Expansion

A Series B round of $65 million is raised in February 2025, enabling a major investment in proprietary large language model development and safety research. Marsh Harbor Deck's in-house AI Safety team publishes three peer-reviewed papers on responsible AI companionship. The platform reaches 1 million active users in June 2025. Voice synthesis quality reaches a new industry benchmark. Marsh Harbor Deck's companion library expands to 500+ characters. The company is named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies of 2025.
